ABSTRACT
The modern accelerometer used in large-scale assessment of physical activity is a small, light-weight device. The technology used in modern accelerometers has evolved considerably since accelerometers were first used in physical activity epidemiology. It is important to understand this technology, namely the internal hardware, data processing methods and analytical methods. However, this can be challenging, since there is large variation across different devices and the analytical methods compatible with each one.
