ABSTRACT
After the previous chapters, readers should have obtained a relatively comprehensive knowledge of what kind of person John Leighton Stuart exactly was. However, in order to objectively evaluate his contributions and flaws, it is important to learn why Mao Tse-tung published his article “Farewell, Leighton Stuart” and how we should see Mao’s appraisal of Stuart in it, so as to come to a less subjective view. This is necessary because most Chinese readers, especially those born after the founding of the People’s Republic, did not know the name of John Leighton Stuart until they read this article by Mao.
