ABSTRACT
Stuart kept a close eye on changes and developments in international circumstances, which distinguished him from presidents of other private universities in China. He maintained close contacts with China’s political elites at that time over years of working and living in China, so he was on high alert for Japan’s expansion in and aggression against China, to which he maintained a negative attitude all along.
