ABSTRACT

When you are arranging any kind of school trip or visit, always do ensure that it is accessible for learners with physical disabilities and medical conditions, including those with behavioural needs such as ADHD. Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments for these young people to attend trips and visits, and there have been many cases nationally where parents have taken schools to tribunal under the Equality Act for excluding learners with additional needs from trips and visits. This includes schools who have not permitted these learners to attend, as well as some who have failed to make adjustments that would allow them to be included. You can plan for this by meeting with the SENCO at the earliest stage of planning, and making sure the necessary arrangements, adjustments, medical care planning and risk assessments are in place from the outset.
