ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 explores the issue of mobile digital distraction and the effects of multitasking on the attention function of student and professional actors. Many of our previous interviewees comment on what they are seeing in the conservatory classroom as well as in the professional theatre. The consensus is, given the importance of attentional focus to the actor, the issues surrounding digital distraction are of growing importance and impact. We look at the research that has been done on altered brain function and patterns of attention as a result of multitasking behaviors and suggest that advanced consciousness training techniques (A.C.T.), such as suggested in this book, might act as a partial remedy for fractured attention spans (particularly for student actors).
