ABSTRACT
The tame ending of the campaign of St. Quentin had surprised all Europe, and though in August it seemed as if France was ruined, and Paris in desperate danger, by the end of the autumn Henry II had once more a formidable army at his disposition, while the heterogeneous forces of Philip II had dispersed into winter quarters or disbanded themselves.
