The Victorians loved toys. Some of their favourites were automata that were usually made of wood and had moving parts powered by a hand crank. Toy soldiers were also a success. Winston Churchill was given his first set in 1881 when he was 7 years old. He loved them and built up a collection of nearly 2000. For girls it wasn’t guns but afternoon tea. Toy makers have been selling afternoon tea sets for at least 200 years. Girls could gather their friends around a table and have a dainty tea party of their own, just like their mother or their nanny.
