ABSTRACT
This chapter establishes the rationale and context for the study. It provides an overview of relevant scholarship (and the gaps in scholarship as perceived by the author) including writing about British and Western Buddhist women, and Buddhist ordination. The chapter pays close attention to the methods and methodology underpinning the study, including awkward terminology. The chapter concludes with an overview of the book as a whole.
