ABSTRACT

the importance of transport in the location of fac differs markedly from one industry to another. Four different forms of transport are involved, although they are rarely all important in the same industry: they are the transport of raw materials, of finished goods, of fuel, and of workers. The first three, of course, involve the transport of goods in trains, lorries, ships and barges, while the fourth involves passenger transport in the form of trains, buses, trams, cycles, motor cars and on foot. This distinction is important as it is considerably cheaper to transport goods than the equivalent bulk of human beings so that even leaving aside the question of human fatigue and time wasted in travelling, it is often cheaper to bring work to the workers than contrariwise.
