ABSTRACT

The analysis of this chapter and the next in some ways forms the heart of the book. We study in greater depth a sample of 53 FURs looking at data for cores and hinterlands separately. These data relate to demographic, economic, housing, social and environmental indicators. Although the material is central to the book it is, because of its detail, necessarily technical and will be heavy going for the casual reader. The best strategy may be to use it, especially this chapter, as reference material. Elements are referred to in the more synoptic and policy oriented chapters and those references may provide an entrée. Those who follows this strategy may want to come back to check detail or look at data for particular FURs or on particular topics. To encourage the reader who wants to go directly to the detail in this and the next chapter, we have tried to keep the interpretation simple and eliminate unnecessary elaboration and explanation.
