ABSTRACT
This section is included to provide a better understanding of how breastfeeding works. If we understand the anatomy and physiology as well as hormonal influences, it is easier to identify what has gone wrong when mothers experience problems. It is easy to suggest, as the nineteenth-century ‘experts’ did, that modern women are no longer equipped to breastfeed their babies without difficulty for more than a limited period.
