ABSTRACT
B o t h H o s p i t a l a n d C h u r c h o f S a n t o S p i r i t o in S a s s i a b e c a m e k n o w n for o r g a n m u s i c . With t h e r e b u i l d i n g o f t h e c h u r c h , the n e w o r g a n - c a s e c a m e to define t h e interior, as will be d e m o n s t r a t e d here. T h e p r e s t i g e a n d p e r v a s i v e n e s s o f church music g u a r a n t e e d that the site from w h i c h it e m a n a t e d o v e r t h e nave, the u p p e r w a l l o v e r t h e s i d e e n t r a n c e , w o u l d b e c o m e afocal p o i n t o f t h e p l a n . To b e sure, t h e C h u r c h o f S a n t o S p i r i t o in S a s s i a w a s o n e o f t h e first
c h u r c h e s b u i l t a f t e r t h e S a c k o f R o m e , b u t it was a l s o o n e o f t h e few b u i l t in i t s e n t i r e t y b e f o r e t h e C o u n c i l o f T r e n t ( 1 5 4 5 - 6 5 ) i s s u e d n e w s t a n d a r d s for e c c l e s i a s t i c a l a r c h i t e c t u r e . N o t s u r p r i s i n g l y , c e r t a i n f e a t u r e s r e c a l l H i g h R e n a i s s a n c e i n t e r i o r s , e v i d e n t in the p l a n s for t h e n e w S t P e t e r ' s .
