ABSTRACT

Although many forms of democratic participation, such as the electoral, have decreased, other types, such as that related to advocacy democracy, have increased in the interests of extended access to and thus, more control of and influence in decision-making, transparency, and accountability. Although these objectives have been sought after throughout history, each generation that hopes to adapt democracy to a new age, pursues them in its own way. In most recent times public members were part of the response in the context of a growing nonprofit sector that provides new opportunities for action salient to their interests.
