It was in 1978 when the first production of Egoli was performed by John Moalusi Ledwaba, Susan Shabangu and Daniel Stoppa Lekalakala. The latter was later replaced by Hamilton Mahonga Silwane. Produced by Soyikwa Black Theatre company which is now known as Soyikwa Institute of African Theatre. Most of the performances were in schools, community halls and church buildings in various townships around Johannesburg. When the production was to be performed in the Cape, Susan Shabangu's parents would not allow her to leave Johannesburg. So the play had to be performed as a two-hander by John and Hamilton. The play was originally directed collectively by members of Soyikwa-Raymond Hlongwane, Richard Lebelhe, Matsemela Manaka and the cast. Later on, as members of the group pursued different careers, Matsemela and John continued to co-direct the play. Then Rob Amato took over as director for the performances at the Space Theatre in Cape Town and the Market Theatre in Johannesburg.
