ABSTRACT

Spiritual Baptists are found throughout the Eastern Caribbean and in places to which people from the Caribbean have migrated. Henne~ who studied the Vmcentian Spiritual Baptists, described them as a form of fundamentalist Christianity (Henne~ 1971, p. 219; 1974, p. 23). Glazier, who has written more than anyone else about the religion, has identified the beliefs of the Spiritual Baptists in Trinidad as polytheistic (Glazier, 1983, p. 4; 1992, p.143). While these two views seem irreconcilable, they do in fact reflect the very wide variation that occurs in Spiritual Baptist belief and practice. Spiritual Baptists from the island of St. Vmcent, also called the Converted, have a different tradition from those on other islands.
