ABSTRACT
Until recently, pain has been a rather neglected topic in the history of science and medicine. Fortunately there is now growing interest, provoked by the appearance of specialised clinics devoted to pain in most first world countries, the foundation of the International Association for the Study of Pain in 1973, and a trend toward placing human corporeal experience more centrally within academic writing in the humanities.
