ABSTRACT
IT WAS ALSO the desire of the Embassy to engage a few English ladies to go to Japan, to teach Japanese women household duties as known and practised in Great Britain. I was therefore deputed to engage for a period of three years , three ladies , one a matron at $ 150 per month, another a governess at $ 100 per month, and a third a seamstress at $60 per month. These women were to have free quarters in Tokio and their passages out and back paid.
