ABSTRACT

HAVING at the end o f 1869 made due arrangements for the erection of lighthouse towers , etc. , on the sites chosen for them, and the work proceeding with fair rapidity, I was distressed to learn that the vessel bringing out the illuminating apparatus to Japan, had some months previously been totally wrecked on the coast of Formosa. The Japanese at once gave instruc tions through Sir Harry Parkes to re-order from Europe all that had been lost.
