ABSTRACT
Language has a purpose and a function. Browne (1996) lists many reasons for listening and speaking, in and out of school. These include the need to instruct, suggest, question, challenge, clarify, describe, discuss, explore understanding, initiate action or change, investigate, reflect, reshape thinking, rehearse experiences, speculate, state opinions, summarise, report and explain.
