ABSTRACT
In order to quantify emissions of greenhouse gases from transport, and more particularly from personal travel, it is necessary first to define the transport system and its boundaries. Estimates of energy consumption and greenhouse emissions in transport are often restricted to the day-today running of vehicles: energy used in non-operational activities, such as the manufacture and maintenance of vehicles and infrastructure, tends to be overlooked - not least because of the difficulties involved in measuring it.
