ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to explore the current state of knowledge regarding the effects on fertility decisions of changes in the direct eco nomic costs and value of children; to identify, if possible, promising means of policy intervention, exploiting these effects, that would reduce fertility in the less developed countries through government action; and to devise, at least tentatively, experimental and other research that would test the efficacy and feasibility of such policies.
