ABSTRACT
Much has been written throughout the 20th century about Walt Whitman and sexuality. In the early decades of Whitman criticism, writers couched references to his sexuality in the most apologetic terms, usually assuring readers that his "perversion" in no way affected his ability to write good poetry. Much was also written denying that Whitman suffered from the "taint" of homosexuality.
