Unfortunately, very little has been written about African American religion and homosexuality. Various Christian denominations with significant African American memberships have doctrinal statements about sexuality, which often recount biblical prohibitions against homosexuality. Some small Christian presses have published books on topics including homosexuality as sin and approaches to overcoming homosexuality through prayer and Christian community. Likewise, there are Islamic statements about homosexuality as prohibited by the Koran and the Muslim tradition. Most books dealing with Islam and homosexuality focus on forbidden sexual practices in Islamic countries rather than among African American Muslims. The prevailing silence on homosexuality within many African American communities is evidenced by this paucity of written material.
