Heathrow is the leading international airport and the world’s second busiest cargo port. Over 90 airlines use it and flights depart from it to more destina­ tions worldwide than from any other airport. The airport began its life in 1946 when it served a total of 18 destinations with a small number of airlines making a total of 9000 flights a year. By 1998 the airport handled over 60 million passengers with 90 airlines serving over 200 destinations worldwide, with an average of 1200 flights a day and 429,000 a year. Heathrow offers more flights to international destinations than any other airport; there are 36 flights daily to Paris and 22 flights daily to New York. The most popular destina­ tions from Heathrow are New York, Paris, Amsterdam and Dublin. The busiest day so far recorded at Heathrow was 2 August 1998, when it handled 209,297 passengers.
