ABSTRACT
Structural pragmatic approaches focus on language form, and the inferences that can be drawn from the use of a particular linguistic form. In addition, structural approaches concern themselves with the coherence, or meaningfulness, of a text. Since achieving coherence is necessary for all texts, structural pragmatic approaches thus emphasize the universal dimensions of communication. However, while coherence must be established in any text, different languages and different cultures may use varied methods to achieve coherence.
