ABSTRACT
The South Slav conflict raises two particular concerns regarding the break-up of existing states: the manner in which ethnic and religious identities interact with historical memories to generate intense nationalism and violence; and how different religious persuasions combine with volatile domestic politics to define and reinforce ethnic identity.
