ABSTRACT

Grozving up in HaxvaVi, I remember that many of my Part-Haxvaiian friends were ashamed ofbeing Haxvaiian. Instead, they identified themselves as hapa-haole (half xvhite) or Japanese. I have alzuays identified myself as Haxvaiian, partly because I do not look haole, and I do not look Japanese. In fact, I often heard older Haxvaiian girls say that they xvould marry-up to a haole or Japanese boy. Marrying a Haxvaiian boy xvas like marrying a janitor or airline porter. Many local girls, in order to avoid being called a stupid Haxvaiian, read U.S. books and magazines, attempted to dye or streak their hair blonde, and xvore fashions seen on U.S. television programs.
