ABSTRACT
Whereas infantry tactics and technology made no radical leaps between the wars, tank technology took enormous strides. Vast technical improvement over the primitive machines o f the Great War brought a far more extensive battlefield role within the ambition o f the champions o f armour. Some forecast that mechanisation would bring a revolution in the conduct o f land warfare. Naturally, others disagreed. There being no opportunity between the wars to test in battle either the technology or the tactical and operational theories devised for its use, this controversy burned on up to the outbreak o f war in 1939.
