ABSTRACT
The failure of the '45 probably helped to precipitate, as did the defeat of the South in the American Civil War, the downfall of an agrarian economy. The traditional community life was undermined, and there was a growing commercialisation, rather grandiloquently defined as a transition from status to contract. There was no large-scale enclosure movement comparable to that of England.
