ABSTRACT
In thinking about research in English, it is necessary to recognise the existence of research influences of different kinds and it is helpful to take some account of the subject’s movement and trajectory. With this in mind, I shall begin with a brief account of developments in English in post-war years. I shall then try to disentangle the broad perspectives which have emerged and relate these to the empirical investigations to be found in contemporary work.
