ABSTRACT
On the day the Treaty of Nerchinsk was signed, 27 August 1689, seventeen-year-old Peter the Great overthrew the Regent Sophia in Moscow. During the 36 years of his reign then beginning, he wrenched Russia away from its Eurasian semi-isolation and made it once more a regular, if unusual, member of the European family of nations.
