ABSTRACT
The abstract-mindedness that Lévi-Strauss claims for primitive man, Lacan claims for the Unconscious in all men. The thinking of the Unconscious, like the thinking of primitive man, is no mere welter of concrete images, but a functioning sign-system of empty structural differentiations. In Lacan's famous phrase, 'the unconscious is structured like a language'.1
