ABSTRACT
I was a simple-minded child. My grandfathertraded lumber in Nantong, Jiangsu province. The business
was prosperous enough to support six children. His son - my father - left for Shanghai when he was very young and became an accountant. My mother was a taitai - a housewife with some status. She never worked outside the house until my father died from an illness in 1953. Then our lives suddenly changed.
