ITiswellknownthatinpsycho-therapeutic workthepersonalityofthephysiciancounts foraverygreatdeal.Notonlywillonephysiciansucceedwhereanotherfails,butone andthesamephysicianwillnumberboth successesandfailuresamonghiscases.Becausethisistruewhennospecialmethodof psycho-therapyisfollowed,andthephysician reliesonlittlemorethantactandself-confidence,theentirepracticeofpsycho-therapy hasundoubtedlyand,Ithink,notunjustly incurredagooddealofobloquy.Disapproval hascome,naturallyenough,fromthosewho havebeentrainedinscientificmethod,and seetheopportunitiesforimpositionandcharlatanrywherenothingbetterisinvolvedthan sheerempiricism.Moreover,anotherserious objectionisinherentinthisolder,haphazard psycho-therapy.Itiswithoutanymeansof ascertainingwhyitsresultsaregoodorbad B
