ABSTRACT
On this view the cardinal differences between intelligence and instinct are that intelligence is a capacity, and not a pre-disposition to act upon an impulse, and that it reacts to no specific situation peculiar to itself, since it functions in the service of any instinct, and under the impulsion of that instinct. Nor is it, like instincts in general, an hereditary determiner of behaviour.
