ABSTRACT
DISCUSSION of this topic is difficult, partly because its subjectmatter is almost commensurate with life. Varieties of type in human learning are nearly as many as the varieties of human experience itself; and much of the apparent contradiction in conflicting interpretations is due to the fact that disputants are talking of somewhat differing forms of experience at different levels of difficulty. A brief historical digression may be useful here.
