Amongfarmersthemaintainingofprestigeisaverydifferent matter.Thefarmerisnotsurroundedbyneighbours,seesfew strangersand,asamemberofasharplydefinedoccupational class,doesnotmixagreatdealwithpeoplefromotherwalksof life.Forthisreasonfarmingfamiliesdonotindulgeinsomuch personaldisplayasvillagers.Clogsarenotlookedonasasign ofsocialinferiorityandfarmhouseholdsbuyfarfewerclothes thandothoseinthevillage.Farmers'clothingismoreoften 'tailormade'andlastsforasurprisingnumberofyears.Atimportantsocialgatheringsthefarmersandtheirfamiliesareofteneasily distinguishablebytheoutmodedstyleoftheirclothes,whichin afewextremecasesmaybeasmuchastwentyyearsold.Farm furnitureisnotnormallyurbanintypeandmanyofthefarms arefurnishedto-dayalmostexactlyastheywerethirtyormore yearsago,exceptperhapsfortheadditionofabathroomduring thelastfiveyearsorso.
