ABSTRACT
Scaleandimportanceofsettlementschemes Inthepastdecade,thebalanceofeconomicprescriptionsforthe thirdworldbasswungawayfromindustrializationandtowards agricultureasameansofachievingeconomicgrowth.1Atthesame timegovernmentsinlessdevelopedcountries,whetherstillunder colonialruleorindependent,havelaunchedprojectsforthereorganizationofagricultureandfortheintroductionintoagriculture ofmoreadvancedtechnology.Agriculturalschemesstartedin Britishcoloniesbeforeindependence,andsinceindependencein nationsformerlyunderBritishrule,haveincludedawiderangeof approaches:landconsolidation,farmplanning,croprotation, creditschemes,marketingco-operatives,cashcropintroduction, mechanizationandstatefarming,amongothers.
