ABSTRACT

Itisworthtakingapausefromtheanalysisofrealismasitdevelopedinthe West.AchapteronSoviettheoriesofimperialismis,ofcourse,notessential forlookingattheevolutionofrealistthoughtwithinthedisciplineofInternationalRelationsasitdevelopedintheUS.Hence,readersmightimmediatelyturntotheinterlude.Thereare,however,threereasons,whysucha chaptermightbeusefulfortheargumentofthisbook.First,itcanserve asacomparativeepiloguetorealisttheoriesintheUS,becauseitshows inamoreextrememannerhowsuperpowercompetitionduringtheCold Waraffectedscholarlythought.ItscrutinizeshowSoviettheorizingadjusted analyticaltools,initiallyMarxist,tothenewglobalinterestsoftheUSSR. Second,itstandsfortheremarkablefactthatSoviettheoriesofimperialism, increasinglydivorcedfromtheirMarxistorigins,displayasometimesastonishingconceptualconvergencewithrealism.•Finally,itservestomakethe readeratleastsuperficiallyacquaintedwithconceptsthat,redefinedin laterWesternneo-Marxistwritings,havespurredtheinterestofsomerealist writersinInternationalPoliticalEconomy(seeChapter11).
