Listeningisclearlyaveryimportantaspectoftheeducationoftheyoung child.TheNationalCurriculumProgrammeofStudyforEnglishrequires teacherstoencouragetheirpupils'tolistenwithgrowingattentionand concentration'and'torespondappropriatelyandeffectivelytowhatthey haveheard'.AswesawinChapter1,musichasaveryimportantcontributiontomaketothedevelopmentofsuchskills.Weshouldnot,however, confusegenericskillsofthistypewiththetypeoflisteninginwhichweare involvedinmusic.Withinthemusiccurriculum,weshouldbefocusingon thedevelopmentofaparticulartypeoflisteningandonusingitinparticularwaysandforparticularpurposes.
