ABSTRACT

Mary Delariviere Manley (1663-1724) wrote 'The New Atalantis' to extol, among others, the Tories Harley and Peterborough. At the same time she used her satirical fiction to attack the Marlboroughs, the Junto Whigs, and their followers. Her insinuations about Steele, factually true, reflect as much personal malice as political bias.
