On 2 February 1946 Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein was in the cutting room at Mosfilm putting the final touches to the second part of Ivan the Terrible? He never managed to see it again on the screen. That same evening he suffered a serious heart attack at Dom kino [the House of Cinema], where an official banquet had been organised in honour of those who had recently been awarded the Stalin Prize.3 Eisenstein was among them, as the author of Part One of the film about Tsar Ivan.4
