ABSTRACT

In the last chapter, Rita, who is under the Italian State witness protection programme, recounts with trepidation her life story to her two daughters. She is a young woman from Naples who married into the Camorra, the Neapolitan Mafia, and became her husband’s partner in crime. She is a full participant, involved in drug dealing, extortion, and loan sharking in her local community. When her husband is arrested for ‘camorra association’, she doesn’t shy away from her responsibilities; instead, she carries on leading the clan, making strategic decisions, and keeping her members safe. Contrary to being a passive bystander with no agency, Rita embodies all the agency, influence, and power of Camorra women in Naples.
