ABSTRACT

The existence of song-and-dance communication means that suggestion is constantly present in human interactions. Psychoanalysis is the study of spontaneous communication arising in the register of song-and-dance. It provides the patient with a chance to learn about his mode of communication and his mental life, and thereby to play, goallessly, with them in precisely the way that creative scientists play with their data. Projection into the analyst via projective identification/song-and-dance is, among other things, a form of experimentation. The analyst, for his part, reflects on what role the projective identification has cast him into, but does no more. This last is a sign of respect for the patient. The analyst allows the patient to play on him, in order for him to learn about the patient, but does not himself play on the patient.
