ABSTRACT

Benjamin orchestrates an exorcism of internalized homophobia; the exorcism is (imaginatively) performed by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys. The exorcism rites are queered to pay homage to queer icons, provide intellectual and narrative space for queer confessions, and to render visible the queer shame held by Gray, Benjamin, Hamilton, and Jason. The chapter provides a disturbing account of how queer men are socialized to hate themselves and each other via cultural messages that paint them as promiscuous, diseased, deranged, and unlovable.
