ABSTRACT

Italy is a large country in the South of Europe with a population of approximately 57 million. It is officially known as the Italian Republic and the official language is Italian. Italy’s education system is a unidimensional single education framework for all children and there are nine years of compulsory schooling. Only 1.8 per cent of school children are considered ‘handicapped’ or to have special educational needs in Italy. Within this group the main categories identified are shown in Table 7.1.
