ABSTRACT
Social change is often messy, proceeding in fits and starts, and people feel out of sorts as they change from old to new ways of doing things. Such feelings are illustrated by the way we celebrate holidays, which provides a metaphor for the irregular movement toward equality of women and men, toward the transformation of family life.
