354 Who was responsible for the act of demolition on December 6, 1992? Was it planned by the BJP? By the RSS? By the VHP? To this date, there are no definite answers, only denials and accusations. Advani, who was present on the scene, seated on the speakers’ platform nearby, was reported by independent media to have asked the kar sevaks not to climb the domes. Following the demolition, he resigned his position as leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha; so did Kalyan Singh (BJP) as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh for his government’s failure to stop the demolition. Vajpayee, who was not present at the demolition, commented on the following day that it was the BJP’s worst miscalculation; he could see that it would damage his party. (page 375)
