ABSTRACT

After the disastrous fall of the Pagan kingdom at the hands of the Mongols in 1287, the majority Burmans were politically shattered. Not until the establishment of the Toungoo dynasty (1531–1732) did they retrieve their dominant position. After a brief period of political eclipse lasting two decades, they reestablished their power with the emergence of the last dynasty in Burmese history, the Alaungpaya, or Konbaung (1752–1885).
