ABSTRACT

Rosalía Hernández's life reflects many of the changes in the lives of Cuban women brought about by the Cuban revolution. Now 55 years old, she was born in Oriente into a poor family of 13 children and only finished first grade. She is still illiterate; although a teacher lived with them after the revolution, Rosalía had too many children to concentrate on studying. Rosalía was married at a young age to a man who became active in the Revolutionary Army and fought with Fidel in the Sierra Maestra. He is still active in the Communist Party and now works in agriculture. They had four children before moving to the Havana area after the revolution in 1959.
